My cousin has been visiting us, which means last minute lets-go-explore trips must be had. So this week we hopped in a car and headed north for an eight hour trek through pine forests, desserts, jungles and a couple mountain ranges. We were told we need four-wheel drive, which we did, but we also saw a few tuk-tuks mastering muddy mountain roads. Those tiny three-wheelers never cease to amaze me.
Finally, we dropped into Semuc Champey, a long river of crystal blue waters, vivid greens and mysterious cave adventures. We stayed at a great little eco-lodge, complete with swings at the bar. I felt like a kid again – alive in wonder, cliff jumping, crawling up waterfalls and making our way down the river, pool by pool.
The adventure is so worth it.
